Ingredients
Scale
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
- 1/4 cup onion (finely chopped)
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
- 1 cup onion (sliced)
- 1 cup mushrooms (sliced)
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons water)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- Fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Hamburger Steaks: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined—avoid overmixing.
- Form the Patties: Shape the mixture into four equal patties, about 1/2 inch thick. Press a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
- Cook the Patties: Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F or 70°C). Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms are tender.
- Add Broth and Sauce: Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
- Thicken the Gravy: Stir in the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) and continue to simmer for an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine Patties and Gravy: Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Let them simmer together for a few minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Serve: Transfer the Hamburger Steaks to plates and top with the gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
